ABLATIVE ARMOR
- Starship protective skin that is designed to vaporize under weapons fire, thereby dissipating energy and protecting the ship's systems inside. Ablative Armor technology is a closely held secret, but was long thought not feasible for production model starships ("Paradise Lost" [DS9]).
|
ACADEMY FLIGHT RANGE
- Training range located near Saturn in the Sol System. Reserved solely for flight excercises of the cadets of Starfleet Academy ("The First Duty" [TNG]).
|
ACTIVE-SCAN NAVIGATION
- Active-scan navigation works by echolocation, such as when an modulated tetryon pulse is transmitted, so that a reflection off an object will permit the object's location to be determined. Generally only used when passive sensors cannot be used ("Starship Down" [DS9]).
|
ADVANCED TACTICAL TRAINING
- Starfleet Intelligence-sponsored program for specialized tactical and covert operations. Admission to this program requires the recommendation of a superior officer or the SIC. The course load is considered very difficult, and roughly 50% of the class fail to complete the program each year. Fewer than 10% successfully graduate from the class ("Preemptive Strike" [TNG], [STP]).
|
ANGOSIANS
- A non-violent civilization centered on Angosia III. Their society is dedicated to the development of the mind and cultivation of the intellect. To fight the Tarsians, they used advanced methods still not clearly understood by Federation scientists to create a group of "supersoldiers", who were capable of surviving at any cost. Applied for Federation membership in 2366, but was initially turned down due to the treatment of the veteran supersoldiers ("The Hunted" [TNG]). The Nayrok administration changed its policies towards the vetrans, which subsequently green-lighted their membership. A joint Federation-Angosian team worked to rehabilitate the veterans, which was eventually successful ([STP]).

ANTARES-CLASS CRUISER
- Common space craft design legacy that has existed for more than a century ("Charlie X" [TOS]). Used by many cultures, including the Bajorans ("Ensign Ro" [TNG]), Corvallans ("Face of the Enemy" [TNG]), Federation, Talarians ("Heart of Glory" [TNG]), and Tholians ([DS9]).
|
ANTOSIANS
- Peaceful inhabitants of Antos IV. Originally suspected of being xenophobic, the truth was a bit more startling: the Antosians possess cellular metamorphosis techniques. Antos IV is a member of the Federation ("Whom Gods Destroy" [TOS]). Recent years have seen more Antosians leave their homeworld and several are now Starfleet Officers ("Muddy the Waters" [STP]).

|
ARA SCAN
- Medical scan used to determine the truthfulness of a humanoid subject ("Projections" [VGR]).
|
ARGUS ARRAY
- A large subspace radio telescope located three light-years from Cardassian space ("Parallels" [TNG). The array has had numerous operational setbacks ("The Nth Degree" [TNG]). During the Dominion War, the Argus Array was held by Federation Alliance forces at great cost, providing useful tactical data ([STP]).
|
ARMENS, TREATY OF
- Established in 2255 between the Sheliak Corporate and the UFP, ceeding several Class-H planets from the Federation to the Sheliak. The treaty contained 500,000 words and took 372 Federation legal experts to draft, due to the fact that the Sheliak considered Federation standard a "primitive" language ("The Ensigns of Command" [TNG]).

|
ARONA ILLYSA
- Chief Medical Officer of the USS Phantom, ranked at full lieutenant. Arona was responsible for determining that Admiral Gossimere was a clone, and indirectly saved Commander Dade Rojc's life upon passing that information to Starbase 63 Command and Control ("Phantoms in the Night" [STP]). Arona testifed on behalf of Rojc during his trial on Romulus, and treated his relapse before he became violent ("Closure" [STP]).

BADLANDS
- Region of space near the Cardassian border. Populated with dangerous plasma storms, the Badlands were consider extremely hazardous for space travel and as such, many ships have been lost there ("The Maquis, Part I" [DS9]). Because of the region's disruption fields, numerous reisistance and more disreputable groups have used it as a safe haven. Among these groups are the Maquis ("The Maquis, Part I" [DS9]) and the Bajoran Resistance ("Starship Down" [DS9]).

BA'KU
- The Ba'ku are an advanced humanoid civilization. Their home world is unknown, but is believed to be located beyond Federation space. Some three hundred years and fifty years ago the Ba'ku had
entered a period of rapidly escalating and uncontrolled technological advancement, to the point where they were on the verge of destroying themselves. A group of Ba'ku left their world to begin again, fearing a catastrophe. Determined not to repeat the mistakes the rest of their people had made, the Ba'ku adopted a philosophy of near total avoidance of high technology. For two hundred years the Ba'ku society continued in a pre industrial state; however, in the 2270's a group of young Ba'ku attempted to seize control of the settlement. They planned to abandon the policy on non-reliance on technology and become a starfaring race once again; their attempt quickly failed and the group were exiled from the planet. When the exiles learned that Starfleet had already discovered the Ba'ku settlement and learned of the immortality enjoyed by the natives, they came to the Federation offering an explanation for the Ba'ku puzzle; high concentrations of metaphasic radiation particles in the planets rings was continually regenerating the genetic structure of the life on the planet. Concealing their Ba'ku heritage, the Son'a offered a method of collecting this radiation via a large orbital vessel they had constructed. The potential was awesome; a whole new medical science would be created, with sufficient radiation present in the rings to treat billions of individuals. However, the collection method involved initiating an isothermic reaction within the rings which would destroy all life on the surface of the planet. Through observation it became apparent that the Ba'ku were not a primitive people--they possessed technological knowledge up to and including warp drive. With Prime Directive considerations considerably eased by the Ba'ku's new status, the Federation decided to proceed with the Son'a plan. The whole Ba'ku population was limited to six hundred people, all living in one small area. The Federation constructed a replica of their village and the surrounding countryside on a suitably similar planet, and a vessel was built which was capable of transplanting the Ba'ku without their knowledge. However, shortly prior to the implementation of the plan Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-E discovered the operation and made it public, including the fact that the Son'a and Ba'ku were one and the same people. The Federation halted the entire project while a reappraisal was initiated ([Star Trek: Insurrection]). The Federation Council has lifted the planetary quarentine, but permission must still be obtained to make contact with the Ba'ku ([STP]).

BAJORANS
- The Bajoran civilization flourished over half a million years ago and they first gained interstellar capacity over eight centuries ago ("Ensign Ro" [TNG]). The dominant religion of the planet dates back some ten thousand years, and is centred around worship of the aliens living within the bajoran Wormhole - the Bajorans refer to these entities as 'The Prophets' and to the wormhole as the 'Celestial Temple' ("Emissary" [DS9]). The Cardassians claimed Bajor in 2328 ("Ensign Ro" [TNG]) and formally annexed the planet by force in 2339 ("Emissary" [DS9]), driving much of the native population from the planet and enslaving the remainder. Bajoran culture suffered greatly during this period, with many living in squalid conditions ("Ensign Ro" [TNG]). Despite this, the Bajorans maintained a small but agressive resistance effort (at the cost of theif caste system "Accession" [DS9]) throughout the occupation and by 2369 the Cardassian government had become frustrated with the Military's inability to crush this movement. Weary of decades of terrorist activity, the Cardassians pulled out of Bajor the same year ("Emissary" [DS9]). The Bajorans established a provisional government, and requested Federation assistance in administrating the former Cardassian station Terok Nor ("Emissary" [DS9]). In 2373 the Bajoran's petition for Federation membership was accepted, but at the last moment they withdrew their application due to the recommendation of their Emissary, Captain Benjamin Layfette Sisko ("Rapture" [DS9]) and signed a non-agression pact with the Dominion ([DS9]). With the end of the Dominion War, Bajor renewed its request for Federation membership and was promptly accepted ([STP]). Bajorans are characterized primarily by their ridged and noticeably more prominent nose ("Ensign Ro" [TNG]). The current head of their local government is Shakaar Edon, designated First Minister ("Shakaar", "Crossfire" [DS9]).

BAJORAN WORMHOLE
- Artificially generated stable passageway to the Gamma Quadrant located in the Denorios Belt in the Bajoran system. In Bajoran religion, the wormhole is known as the Celestial Temple, home to the "Prophets" who sent Orbs to the Bajor people. In 2369, the wormhole was discovered by Commander Benjamin Sisko and his science officer, Jadzia Dax. Sisko came into contact with the aliens occupying the wormhole during this incident. Deep Space 9 was relocated from a Bajoran orbit to the mouth of the wormhole to establish a secure territorial claim ("Emissary" [DS9]). The wormhole's spatial matrix was made strong enough to resist even a trilithium bomb explosion due to Dominion sabotage ("By Inferno's Light" [DS9]).

BAROLIANS
- Civilization of traders allied with the Romulan Star Empire. Completed trade negotiations with the Romulans in 2364 ("Unification, Part I" [TNG]).
|
BETA-TACHYON PARTICLE
- Particle that can exist only at FTL velocities. It was learned that remodulating shields to emit a beta-tachyon pulse, then emitting a series of antirproton beams into the shield bubble would increase the shielding's strength by a factor of ten ("The Q and the Grey" [VGR]).
|
BETAZOIDS
- Civilization of humanoid telepaths from the Federation member world Betazed ("Haven" [TNG]). Most Betazoids develop their telepathic abilities in adolescence, although a few individuals are born with their telepathy fully functional. These individuals generally require extensive therapy to be able to function in normal society, since they lack the ability to screen out the thoughts of those around them ("Tin Man" [TNG]). Betazoids are incapable of reading Ferengi, Dopterian ("Menage a Troi" [TNG]), or Breen ("The Forsaken" [DS9]) minds (though they can occasionally sense their emotions - "The Price" [TNG]), believed resultant to the four-lobed construction of their brains. Betazoids also cannot read Ullians ("Violations" [TNG]).

|
BILITRIUM
- Crystalline compound. Extremely rare energy source that if used in conjunction with an antimater converter, produces a powerful explosive ("Past Prologue" [DS9])
|
BIO-NEURAL CIRCUITRY
- Advanced computer technology using synthetic neural cells for the data processing; it can organize and process complex information faster and more effeciently than traditional optical processors ("Caretaker" [VGR]). This technology is now standard on all new starships built after 2373 ([STP]). Both the Breen ("Scorpion, Part I" [VGR]) and the Cardassians have some form of this technology ("Proteus" [STP]).
|
BIOGENIC WEAPONRY
- Deadly biological classification of weaponry, illegal under interstellar treaties. The components necessary to creat biogenic weapons include biomimetic gel, retroviral vaccines, isomiotic hypos, and plasma flares ("Preemptive Strike" [TNG]). Cobalt diselenide is such a weapon ("For the Uniform" [DS9]).
|
BOLIANS
- Civilization of light-blue skinned humanoids, distinguished by a bifurcated ridge running down the center of their face, unusually large ear lobes, and blue blood ("The Adversary" [DS9]). The Bolians have a principle of assisted suicide that dates back to their middle ages, termed the double effect principle ("Death Wish" [VGR]).

BORG COLLECTIVE
- An immensely powerful civilization of cybernetically enhanced humanoids centered in the Delta Quadrant of the galaxy. All Borg drones are linked together via a sophisticated subspace communications network, foming a shared consciousness in all individuals connected to the Borg. The Borg are a very intelligent group and exhibit a high degree of adaptability to their tactics--most means of of defense or offense against them were found to work only once, almost immediately after which the Borg develp a countermeasure ("Q Who?" [TNG]). The Borg operate by conquering entire worlds, assimilating civilizations and technology they deem useful. Drones are implanted with sophisticated cybernetic implants which allow them to perform a specific task dedicated to one of three main subdivision: Defense, Communication, and Navigation. The Borg have conquered thousands of worlds across the galaxy ([Star Trek: First Contact]). The first known contact between the Borg and the Federation was in 2365 when the Q entity transported the Enterprise-D to System J-25, where they encountered a Borg Cube ("Q Who?" [TNG]). It is a widely-held theory that the Borg first encountered the Federation and Romulans in late 2364 ("The Neutral Zone", "Q Who?", "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I" [TNG]). Following the first contact in 2365, Strafleet began advance planning for a potential Borg offensive against the Federation. Lieutenant Commander Elizabeth Shelby headed up this project ("The Best of Both Worlds, Part I" [TNG]). One such advancement was the USS Defiant, a heavily armed, compact starship ("The Search, Part I" [DS9]). The Borg have conducted two major strikes against the Federation thus far, each with only one cube ("The Best of Both Worlds" [TNG], [Star Trek: First Contact]). Borg starships are highly decentralized ("Q Who?" [TNG]) and can still function with as much as 72% of the vessel destroyed or damaged ("The Best of Both Worlds" [TNG]). The ship is equipped with powerful energy weapons (including a "cutting beam"), is capable of repairing damage quickly ("Q Who?" [TNG]) and Transwarp drive of some nature ("Descent," [TNG]). The Borg seem to make use of primarily three starship designs, though there are more. The first is the massive Cube ("Q Who?" [TNG]), a cubical, significantly smaller Scout Ship ("I, Borg" [TNG]), and a Sphere ([Star Trek: First Contact]).

BOSLICS
- Humanoid spacefaring civilization. Many make a living as less-than-reputable traders. Characterized by a prominent brow, a vaguely PSI-shaped forehead cleft, and purple hair ("The Homecoming" [DS9]).
|
BREEN
- Once thought to be only a minor, non-aligned race ("Hero Worship" [TNG]), the Breen have emerged in the Dominion War era as a superpower. Shortly before the Chintoka Massacre, the Breen formally allied themselves with the Dominion ("Til Death Do Us Part" [DS9]), a measure instituted by Thot Varus C'rakl'mus ("Phantoms in the Night" [STP]) and later carried on by his two lieutenants, Thot Gor and Thot Pran ("Closure" [STP], "Strange Bedfellows" [DS9], "Tacking into the Wind" [DS9]). The incident that ultimately led to this alliance was nearly thwarted by both Thot Neeron X'Ro'Us and involvement by the Federation ("Phantoms in the Night" [STP]). During the War, the Breen were responsible for both a devastating attack on Earth and the Dominion reclamation of the Chin'toka system ("The Changing Face of Evil" [DS9]). The Breen were included in the Treaty of Bajor that ended the Dominion War ("What You Leave Behind" [DS9]), though they were extremely resistant and nearly held up the peace process to secure their own interests ([STP]). The Breen use disrupters as their primary weapons. They are classified as type 3 (the same type as Klingon and Romulan disrupters), and discharge blue pulses ("Hero Worship" [TNG]). Breen starships also utilize disrupters, although some use phasers ("Hero Worship" [TNG]). Breen starships also have cloaking devices ("Hero Worship" [TNG]). The Breen utilize biological components in much of their technology, including their ships ("Scorpion, Part 1" [VGR]). They are also the manufacturers of the CRM-114, an extremely powerful portable hand cannon designed to destroy moving targets and surface emplacements ("Business as Usual" [DS9]). The Breen are a humanoid race, and stand about the same height as humans ("Indiscretion" [DS9]). They come from a planet of the same name, which has a polar environment ("Return to Grace" [DS9]). As a result of their frigid homeworld, the Breen require heavy survival suits to survive in hot climates ("Indiscretion" [DS9]). At room temperatures, they seem to get along fine wearing thinner uniforms, along with a beaklike helmet that covers their face ("In Purgatory's Shadow/By Inferno's Light" [DS9]). Due to their environment, the Breen are experts at refrigeration ("For the Uniform" [DS9]). Breen brains are four-lobed, as are Ferengi and Dopterian brains. This makes them unreadable by Betazoids ("The Loss" [TNG]). Another interesting part of Breen physiology is that they have no blood ("In Purgatory's Shadow" [DS9]).

BYNARS
- Humanoid civilization that has havily integrated with a sophisticated planetary computer network that serves as the framework for their society. Bynars usually live and work in pairs that are electronically connected for rapid exchange of binary data ("11001001" [TNG]). After stealing the Enterprise-D in 2364, rather than legal reprisal, the Bynars agreed to do development work for the Federation. Their research has culminated in the experimental USS Trojan Horse, which is now in the near Delta Quadrant on shakedown ("Muddy the Waters" [STP]).

CARDASSIANS
- Technologically advanced humanoid civilization characterized by a ridge forehead and neck ("The Wounded" [TNG]). In the past, the Cardassians were a peaceful and spiritual people, but du to the porr resources of the planet, there was widespread starvation and disease. The military seized power and new terrritories and technology were acquired through war, at the cost of millions of lives ("Chain of Command, Part II" [TNG]). In the Cardassian judicial system, one is judged guilty even before being brought to trial, and no appeals process exists ("Maquis, Part II", "Tribunal" [DS9]). Cardassian culture views advanced age as a sign of power and dignity ("Distant Voices" [DS9]). Family is very important to Cardassians, with some households being multi-generational. Intense mind training programs are given to children as young as four years of age, no doubt contributing to the famous Cardassian reputation for photographic memories ("The Maquis, Part I" [DS9]). The Cardassians were involved in a bitter, extend conflict with the Federation throughout the 2350's and early 2360's with a fragile peace finally in place by 2366 ("Unification, Part I", "The Wounded" [TNG]). This peace was threatened several times by both sides, and most notably by the renegade faction known as the Maquis ("The Wounded", "Chain of Command" [TNG], "Emissary", "The Maquis" [DS9]). In 2372, a civilian uprising overthrew the Cardassian Central Command, placing power back in the hands of the Detapa Council. The Klingons were wary of this event, due to their paranoia of Dominion infiltration, and used the event as an excuse to invade ("The Way of the Warrior" [DS9]). The Klingon invasion destroyed the industrial capability of dozens of Cardassian worlds and thus devastated their economy. Seeking to ease animosity between the two, the Federation began providing industrial assistance to the Cardassians ("For the Cause" [DS9]). Gul Dukat agreed to have the Cardassians join the Dominion in 2373, believing that the alliance would return Cardassia to their former glory ("By Inferno's Light" [DS9]). Sadly, this proved not to be the case as the Federation Alliance fought bitterly to avoid being conquered and the Cardassian people became greatly displeased with the alliance, eventually feeling like a conquered people and an uprising began ("Til Death Do Us Part" [DS9]). Irrate at this betrayal, the Dominion turned their weapons on Cardassia Prime shortly before the Dominion War ended and devastated the planet ("What You Leave Behind" [DS9]). Part of the Treaty of Bajor granted the Federation primary control over the Cardassians and they would help them to rebuild. Large portions of the Union's territory is occupied by Breen, Klingon, and Romulan forces as well. The current Detapa Council is mostly made up of members of the former Cardassian Underground Movement, but is lead by a former exile and member of the Obsidian Order ([STP]).

CASCADE VIRUS
- Sophisticated computer software weapon. The virus affects all the computer memory cores aboard the ship, essentially shutting the ship down ("For the Uniform" [DS9]).
|
CELLULAR METAMORPHOSIS
- Process allowing an individual to 'morph' into another's form. The people of Antos IV are known to have this capability. The Antosians primarily seem to use these tecniques for medical reasons ("Whom Gods Destroy" [TOS]). Cellular metamorphosis is usually limited to humanoid forms, but those who have explorered their abilities more fully can occasionally take other form ([STP]).

CHANCELLOR
- Title given to the leader of the Klingon High Council. Past chancellors have included Gorkon and Azetbur ([Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country]). A power struggle for this position occured in 2366 after K'mpec was poisoned ("Reunion" [TNG]), which eventually led to open Civil War ("Redemption" [TNG]). Gowron, son of M'rel emerged victorious after the war and ruled the Empire ("Redemption" [TNG]) for eight years until he was killed by Worf, Son of Mogh, for "dishonoring the Empire" with his political manuevering. Worf passed the leadership mantle onto Martok instead of keeping it for himself ("Final Chapter Ep" [DS9]).

|
CLOAKING DEVICE
- An energy screen generator used to render an object invisible to both the eye and to most sensor systems. Most cloaking devices require so much power that a vessel so cloaked cannot use its weapons systems without decloaking ("Balance of Terror" [TOS]). Several Alpha Quadrant civilizations have cloaking technology, including the Romulans ("Balance of Terror" [TOS]), Klingons ([Star Trek: The Search for Spock]), Aldeans ("When the Bough Breaks" [TNG]), Breen ("Hero Worship" [TNG), and the Federation ("Pegasus" [TNG]). Up until 2373, the Federation was prohibited [openly] from developing cloaking technology, but ammendments to the Treaty of Algeron changed this ([STP]). The Federation uses large-scale tachyon detection grids to detect cloaked ships entering certain areas. The largest of these is on the Federation side of the Neutral Zone ("Face of the Enemy" [TNG]). Apparently they are also employed on key Federation systems ([DS9]).

D'DERIDEX-class WARBIRD
- Also known as the B-Type Warbird. ("The Defector" [TNG]) This class of warbird is significantly larger than a Galaxy-class starship ("The Neutral Zone" [TNG]) and is the backbone of the Romulan fleet. ("?" [DS9]) Several of these vessels were either captured or manufactured by the Dominion and used to attack Breen shipyards. ("Phantoms in the Night" [STP]) Roughly two direct hits by the Type C Phaser Cannon are enough to destroy this vessel. ("Closure" [STP])

|
D'KAZANAK-class WARBIRD, A-TYPE
- Often mistaken for the similar B-Type warbird, the D'kazanak is somewhat larger and better armed than the B-Type. This ship serves primarily in the role of flagship. ([STP]) Less manueverable than the B-Type due to its larger size. Approximately three direct hits from the Type C Phaser Cannon will destroy this vessel. ("Closure" [STP])

|
D'KAZANAK-class WARBIRD, C-TYPE
- The C-Type Warbird is a lighter and more agile version of the B-Type Warbird, which the C-type is derived from. The most significant difference between the two is the C-Type's lack of a lower hull. The C-Type is only reserved for transportation of high-ranking Romulan officials, including the Praetor himself. This type of vessel is far less common than its A-Type and B-Type counterparts. ([STP])

DATAPORT
- Computer interface implanted into a person's brain. A dataport allows one to directly interface with a computer system ("A Simple Investigation" [DS9]).
|
DAYSTROM INSTITUTE
- Major center for science and technology in the 24th century. Named for 23rd century computer scientist Richard Daystrom ("The Measure of a Man", "Data's Day" [TNG]). The head of the Daystrom Council (also referred to as Chair Holder of the Institute) is an influential position within the Federation. Doctor Merak Invinoori served as Chair Holder of the Institute for many years, until his death in 2376 ("Muddy the Waters" [STP]).
|
DESOTO, CAPTAIN ROBERT
- Commanding officer of the USS Hood ("Encounter at Farpoint" [TNG]). One of the top captains in Starfleet and one of the most famous, as well ([VGR]). Commander T'Senishra came highly recommended by DeSoto to Captain Daniel Whitman, despite not wishing to lose his first officer ([STP]). DeSoto was left without a first officer at the close of the Dominion War and specifically requested Commander Dade Rojc, but Rojc respectfully turned down the position ("Closure" [STP]).
|
DISRUPTOR
- Directed-energy weapon used by the Romulans, Klingons ("Tin Man" [TNG]). and the Breen ([Star Trek: Generations]). The Klingon disruptor was also known as a phase disruptor ("Aquiel" [TNG]). Romulan disruptor fire can be identified by a high residue of antiprotons that can linger for several hours after the weapon has been used ("Face of the Enemy" [TNG]). Disruptors were also used as ship-mounted weapons aboard Cardassian warships ("Profit and Loss" [DS9]).
|
DIVISION OF PLANETARY OPERATIONS
- Section of Starfleet tasked with Earth-based functions and operations. DPO headquarters are located in Lisbon, Portugal ("Paradise Lost" [DS9]).
|
DOE, JOHN
- A Zalkonian male of unknown identity discovered by the Enterprise-D personnel in a crashed escape pod on a planet in the Zeta Gelis system in 2366. Suffering from serious injuries, he was brought aboard and treated for his injuries, where he amazed the medical staff with his extremely rapid recovery. It was later learned that Doe was a member of a persecuted minority of the Zalkonians that were undergoing a metamorphosis from humanoid form into a noncaporeal energy being. John Doe was the first to undergo the transfiguration ("Transfigurations" [TNG]) and subsequently returned to Zalkon to lead the ascendancy of all Zalkonians to the higher state ([STP]).

DOMINION
- Powerful alliance of planetary groups in the Gamma Quadrant ("Rules of Acquistion" [DS9]). The Dominion was established some two millenia ago ("To the Death" [DS9]) by the reclusive race of shapeshifters knwon as the Founders. To carry out their agenda, the Founders genetically engineered the Vorta and the Jem'Hadar to serve them ("The Jem'Hadar" [DS9]). The Dominion had successfully planted spies in the Alpha and Beta Quadrant powers by 2370, providing the Dominion with important tactical intelligence. Such agents were often working to destabilize the Quadrant as well, prelude to an apparent invasion ("The Adversary", "The Die is Cast", "Apocalypse Rising" [DS9]). The Dominion repelled several incursions by the Alpha Quadrant cultures into the Gamma Quadrant by force ("The Jem'Hadar" [DS9]). In 2373, the Dominion entered into an alliance with the Cardassian Union, giving them a foothold in the Alpha Quadrant ("By Inferno's Light" [DS9]). War broke out later that year. To get reenforcements unavailable to them from the Gamma Quadrant, the Dominion formally allied with the Breen in 2375 ("Til Death Do Us Part" [DS9]), and very nearly succeeded in turning the tide in the conflict. However, a Cardassian revolt destabilized the war effort, leading to the eventual defeat of the Dominion by the Federation Alliance. As part of the treaty, the female Founder who served as leader of the Dominion would stand trial for the war crimes of the Dominion, and Bajoran Defense Force officer and shapeshifter Odo would return to the Gamma Quadrant with the rest of the Dominion forces ("What You Leave Behind" [DS9]). Since their pull back to the Gamma Quadrant, little has been heard from the Dominion, though there are now formal diplomatic relations between the Federation Alliance and the Dominion, including the exchange of ambassadors ([STP]).

DOMINION BATTLECRUISER
- Large warship employed by the Dominion to serve in a number of roles. These vessels were first encountered by the Federation during the Starship Defiant was searching for the Founders of the Dominion ("The Search, Part I" [DS9]). Despite the relatively large size of the ship it is substantially more maneuverable than comparably sized Starfleet ships, a measure most likely meant to offset the narrower firing arcs of the main armament. On any Starfleet or Klingon vessel the apparent lack of accommodation facilities would limit the Battlecruisers ability to make long deployments, but the Jem'Hadar are apparently able to tolerate a much greater degree of physical discomfort than even the Klingons. These ships have been known to have made patrols lasting in excess of six months without any sign of outside supply or support, though these estimates are based on limited intelligence information. During battle the Dominion appear to use these impressive vessels as multi-role combat types, operating with equal effectiveness against fixed installations, spacecraft and in the ground forces support role. They also carry a complement of Jem'Hadar Attack Ships for deployment during battle. In peacetime they are frequently used on diplomatic missions, which seems at odds with their military nature. Some sources have suggested that the Battlecruiser is the Dominion equivalent of the Starfleet Explorer type, their large size allowing them to carry out an almost unlimited number of roles. However, given the nature of the Dominion it seems more likely that these vessels are indeed warships, used in the diplomatic arena as an implied threat rather than because of their suitability to host extended negotiations (* [STP]). One of these vessels crash-landed on planet Torga IV on stardate 500049, killing all aboard. After a stand-off against several Jem'Hadar, Captain Benjamin Sisko and his officers claimed the ship and towed it back to Deep Space 9 ("The Ship" [DS9]). Captain Sisko and crew later employed a stolen Jem'Hadar Attack Ship from the recovered Battlecruiser in a mission to destroy the Dominion's main storage facility of Ketracel White ("Call to Arms" [DS9]).

DOMINION BATTLESHIP
- Reports that the Dominion was developing a new class of extreme size and power have
circulated for some time, but only with the loss of the USS Valiant was this rumor confirmed. The
Valiant survivors revealed that the battleship was even larger than had been thought --twice the size
of a Galaxy-class starship and three times the strength. Had the ship been put into service it would
have been a major threat to the Federation Alliance ("Valiant" [DS9]). These ships at some point entered class production and several were seen in the Dominion fleet massed around Cardassia Prime ("What You Leave Behind" [DS9]).
